Microcurrent Therapy
“Microamp stimulation has also been called “Biostimulation” or “Bioelectric therapy” because of its ability to stimulate cellular physiology and growth.”

Carl Lewis after receiving microcurrent therapy, he quickly recovery
Microcurrent Therapy gained worldwide attention when elite athletes, including NFL legend Joe Montana and golf icon Jack Nicklaus, used it to speed up recovery from injuries. This cutting-edge therapy is now recognized as an effective tool for injury rehabilitation across various sectors. As interest in microcurrent grew, an expanding community of practitioners began developing innovative techniques and protocols for treating pain and injuries with microcurrent technology.
The popularity of microcurrent therapy also led manufacturers to create specialized devices for cosmetic use, particularly focusing on facial muscles. These devices have found a niche in the skincare industry, and today, microcurrent technology is widely used not only by skincare professionals but also by healthcare providers such as physicians, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physical therapists, massage therapists, and even veterinarians. The applications of microcurrent therapy continue to expand, with research supporting its role in speeding up the healing of wounds, tendons, and ligaments. Some studies suggest that it may also offer benefits for conditions like insomnia and depression.
Microcurrent therapy is part of the evolving field of Bioelectric Medicine, which explores how electrical currents interact with living tissues and the body's natural bioelectric processes. This non-invasive and painless treatment delivers small, targeted electrical impulses to promote tissue healing. It is frequently used in combination with other rehabilitation techniques to treat sports and recreational injuries.
While the exact mechanisms of how microcurrent accelerates tissue repair remain a subject of study, it has shown enough potential to attract major industry players. Pharmaceutical leader GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Google's parent company, Alphabet, have joined forces in a groundbreaking partnership, aiming to merge biology and technology to develop new treatments for chronic conditions and spinal cord injuries.
According to Moncef Slaoui, Chairman of Global Vaccines at GSK, “Electrical signals play a critical role in regulating the body’s processes. In many chronic diseases, these signals can become disrupted. By interpreting and correcting these electrical patterns, bioelectronic medicine holds the promise of offering new therapeutic approaches, complementing traditional drugs and vaccines."
A Comparison of Recovery Progress with Painkillers, TENS and Microcurrent
Painkillers
They only block the brain from recognizing the presence of pain.
TENS
It blocks the transmission of pain signals from the nerves to the brain.
Microcurrent
Microcurrent changes the electrical activity around the injured cells, accelerating healing and reducing pain. According to Cheng’s research, microcurrent can increase ATP production by 3 to 5 times, enhancing the transport of ions between cell membranes, boosting nutrient supply to the injured area, and promoting protein synthesis. Microcurrent also helps remove toxins accumulated at the injury site, allowing nutrients to enter the cells and speeding up metabolism.
What is Microcurrent?
Microcurrent is a form of electrotherapy used in clinical settings, but at a level of only 1/1,000th of typical electrotherapy. In fact, microcurrent delivers energy that is 1/1,000,000th of a regular battery’s energy.
Why Choose Microcurrent?
From past experiences, people believed that stronger electrotherapy was more effective. However, researchers studying microcurrent have completely overturned this concept. Notable scholars like Dr. Robert Becker and Dr. Bjorn Nordenstrom demonstrated that trauma affects the electrical resistance of cells. Electrical current, by nature, seeks the path of least resistance, which means traditional electrotherapy bypasses injured cells. In contrast, microcurrent passes through the injured cells, restoring their electrical balance and helping them return to a normal physiological state, facilitating repair.
Dr. Robert Becker
Dr. Becker, author of The Body Electric, is known as the father of electro-medicine. His research shows that when injured cells are exposed to microcurrent, they immediately start the repair process, which he referred to as the "injury current." However, through biological evolution, this injury current has weakened, which is why many lower organisms have a higher capacity for self-healing than humans. Therefore, humans need microcurrent to compensate for this shortcoming. He also suggested that the miraculous healing effects we obtain from microcurrent are similar to flipping a switch to trigger recovery.
The Importance of Acupoints in Microcurrent Therapy
The acupoints on our body function much like the electrical switches mentioned above. When microcurrent is applied to these points, it activates the body's healing process, similar to turning on a switch.
More on the History and Development of Microcurrent
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, American scientists began researching medical devices that could penetrate the skin's resistance.
Who is Dr. Thomas Wing?
Dr. Wing, born to Chinese immigrants in the United States, founded the MONAD MY-O-MATIC microcurrent machine in California. He was one of the scientists involved in the development of sea wave microcurrents.
Carl Lewis Winning Four Olympic Gold Medals
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Carl Lewis sustained an injury, leading many to believe he would not participate. However, after receiving microcurrent therapy, he quickly recovered and miraculously won four gold medals, breaking world records.

Microcurrent and the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
In 1991 and 2003, two German scientists, Dr. Bert Sakmann and Dr. Erwin Neher, won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their research on microcurrent’s effects on the permeability of cell membranes, further highlighting microcurrent's significance in the medical field.

In the 1990s, Dr. Wing sold part of his research to a British consortium, which developed the CACI microcurrent beauty device. It became widely used in the UK beauty industry, with Princess Diana being one of its most prominent users.
Concept of Microcurrent Therapy
Principle:
The human body naturally carries microcurrents, particularly evident when muscles are active. When tissues are injured, different types of electrical impulses are generated, prompting subcutaneous cellular tissues to self-repair and restore normal function. Microcurrent therapy accelerates this repair process by five to ten times, allowing muscles to regain their elasticity faster.
Cause:
Due to aging, injury, environmental factors such as air quality, water, and food, it causes the cells in the human body may not receive enough oxygen supply quickly, leading to slowed regeneration activity. This results in degeneration, tissue relaxation, and a lack of energy. Microcurrent therapy helps promote cellular self-repair, nourishes tissues, and enhances muscle activity.
Mechanism:
Microcurrents reorganize cells, improve permeability, and enhance microcirculation, thereby increasing the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate). This strengthens cellular activity, allowing excess lactic acid in the muscles to be expelled, alleviating muscle fatigue. With enhanced cellular activity, body fluid circulation is also improved, clearing blockages, which helps reduce swelling and relieve pain.
Research:
Experimental studies have shown that microcurrents can penetrate the skin to the fourth layer, stimulating collagen cells. This leads to increased collagen production, which reduces wrinkles, softens the skin, and helps fade spots, dark marks, and scars.
